Themes of Last Year at Marienbad

There are many themes in this film. A big one is memory, the whole movie he is trying to convince her that they have met before and planned to meet a year later but she says she does not remember. There is also this repetition that goes through out the film with the repetition of certain statues, rooms, etc. There is a lot of repetition in the dialogue, the same phrases keep being repeated about the mansion, about the really cold day when the lakes froze over, and he always says "I met you once" a lot. What other themes do you see? -Danielle Holub

  1. A theme that stuck out to me that goes hand in hand with memory is the ambiguity of the film. There is no objectivity in the film instead several subjective interpretations of the past. The memories of the characters are clearly fallible and the audience has no specific clues as to who to believe or which version of the past is the true version.

  2. The repetition at the beginning of the film was pretty intriguing to me, and went on for roughly 5~6 minutes.

There were also scenes that were repeated that weren't repeated in the exact same fashion, an example being the scene shown in class were the woman is shot).
